One of the popular budget friendly destinations in India is Shimla. Shimla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is called the queen of hill stations with many sightseeing places and was named the summer capital in the British Raj.  

The climate of the city is cold during the winters and warm during the summers. The best time to visit Shimla is between the months of November to February. Shimla is located on the south-west ranges of the Himalayas. You can follow these tips for budget friendly travelling in Shimla: 

Plan and book your flights ahead of time to get the best prices. You can find direct flights to Shimla and land at the Jubbarhatti airport which is 23 kms from the city. 

Shimla has the largest number of hotels and you can find affordable priced hotels in the city. Or you can choose to stay on the outskirts of the city in hotels which offer good rates.

For visiting the town you can book a private vehicle or go by the vehicle provided by the hotels where you stay. Roads in the town are narrow and have slopes so travelling by car or taxis is advisable. The travelling rates are affordable. 

There are many good restaurants in Shimla which serve delicious food at the best prices.

Places to visit

The Mall and the Ridge

These are popular spots located in the heart of the city. The Mall is the main and the best shopping street in Shimla and has many restaurants, shops, banks, clubs and tourist offices. Private vehicles are not allowed in this area and so one has to walk all the way. 

The Ridge is located along the Mall Road and hosts cultural activities in the city. Christ church is the second oldest church in Northern India and it has beautiful stained glass windows inside it.

Jakhoo

It is located 2 kms from the Ridge and is the highest peak in the city. You can get good views of the city and the snow covered Himalayas from here. At the top there is an old Hanuman temple. It has the statue of the deity 108 feet tall and 8,500 feet above the sea level. This statue is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the world.

Tara Devi temple

It is located 11 kms from Shimla at a height of 1851 meters above the sea level. The best way to travel to this place would be by car. The temple was built approximately 250 years old. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess of stars on top of the hill. 

Other places to visit are the state museum, Sankat Mochan temple, summer hill and Snajauli.
