Any small or heavy machinery elements used in industrial or residential areas works only with the support of bearings. The main purpose of bearing in machinery is to constrain relative motion to the desired motion and at the same time reduce friction between to moving parts.

The taper roller bearing is one of the unique types of bearing having the cup and cone type of assembly. The major parts of this taper roller bearing include the outer ring, the inner ring, and numerous tapered rollers. The outer ring forms the cup part of the assembly. The cone assembly of the bearing includes the inner ring, the cage, and the rollers.

Rollers: The rollers used in these bearings are tapered cylindrical rollers. The contact angle and the number of rows in the bearing define their load type and the load-carrying capacity. A larger contact angle can handle axial loads in one direction while the lower angle can handle the radial loads. Increasing the number of rollers can increase the load-bearing capacity of the bearings. The orientation of the two rows can be tandem, double-cup, double-cone, etc.

Cages: The cage is the part of the inner cone assembly and it helps to evenly distribute the roller units. They ensure the even distribution of the load and smooth rotation. The flange allows keeping this cage in place with the cone and rollers. The commonly used cage type is the pin cage. These cages can be made from metals but commonly used ones are made from polymer.

Lubrication: Lubrication is very essential in all types of bearings as it helps to reduce friction, noise, heat, etc. The different types of lubricants used in the bearings include synthetic oil, petroleum-based oil, silicone-based oil, greases, dry films, etc. Each of these lubricants has their advantages and are selected based on the requirement of the bearings.

Seals: Seal is an important component of the bearing as it prevents the entry of contaminants into the bearing. These contaminants may hamper the proper functioning of the bearings. These seals can be contact seals or non-contact seals. The use of contact seals might increase the friction due to the presence of the rubberized seal component sliding against the bearing. The non-contact seal does not cause friction as it allows a small gap between the bearing and the seal.
